🇬🇧 Edith Cavell, an English nurse working in German occupied Belgium during WWI. In 1914 and 1915 she helped sneak 200 British and French soldiers to safety into neutral Holland. She was eventually arrested by the Germans, charged with treason and convicted by a German military court. She was executed by firing squad on October 12, 1915 despite international pleas for mercy. #wwi #ww1 #history #war

🇺🇸 100 years ago today, Alvin York neutralized an enemy machine gun nest and captured 132 German soldiers near Chatel Chéhéry, France . For these actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. His citation reads:
“After his platoon suffered heavy casualties and 3 other noncommissioned officers had become casualties, Cpl. York assumed command. Fearlessly leading 7 men, he charged with great daring a machine gun nest which was pouring deadly and incessant fire upon his platoon. In this heroic feat the machine gun nest was taken, together with 4 officers and 128 men and several guns.” #usa #america #onthisday #wwi #ww1 #usarmy #army
