?? “General [Oliver] Howard exposed his person recklessly…

?? “General [Oliver] Howard exposed his person recklessly during the battle, and came sufficiently near to being a one-legged, as he is already a one-armed veteran. A ragged piece of shell contused his foot severely while he was riding coolly outside the skirmish line, and another piece slightly bruised his forehead.

The General’s remark that he has already made sufficient sacrifices to the rebels, and must, therefore, be entitled to immunity at their hands, would weight lightly with the bloody-minded traitors, if any opportunity against him should be presented, and will lack much of dispelling the anxiety of his friends!”

– Northern “Correspondence” Record
Dallas, Georgia
May 28, 1864

> Howard survived the painful wound and half-jokingly made the remark above

?? General Dan Sickles leg – hit by a cannon ball near the Trostle Farm, during the fighting on the second day of Gettysburg, and amputated. Always controversial, and a bit of a showman, General Sickles donated his limb to the Army’s Medical Museum in Washington DC. For several years he apparently paid his leg a visit, on the anniversary of its loss. The bones and a representative cannon ball are now displayed at the National Museum of Health and Medicine. #war #history #vintage #retro #guns #gun #military #battle #warrior #warriors #combat #campaign #battles #civilwar #uscivilwar #acw #usa #america #csa #usarmy #army
