When the 🇦🇷Argentine Navy flagship, the light cruiser General Belgrano, was sunk by the 🇬🇧British submarine HMS Conqueror’s torpedo on 2 May 1982, a total of 323 of the surface ship’s crew died as she went down. Some 700 others were then rescued from the freezing water. Those deaths represented over half the total KIA suffered by Argentina in the entire 74-day Falklands War.
