German aces Erich Hartmann and Gerhard Barkhorn. The two most successful fighter aces of all time, Hartmann shot down at least 352 Allied aircraft (345 Soviet & 7 American) while Barkhorn was credited with over 300 victories. Both men were highly decorated. Hartmann was one of only 27 men to be awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords & Diamonds. Barkhorn was a recipient of the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves & Swords but even after reaching his 300th victory in January 1945 he never received his diamonds. Both men survived the war and served in the West German air force. Hartmann died in 1993 at the age of 71. Barkhorn died tragically after a car crash which also killed his wife in 1983. #history #ww2 #germany #vintage #pilots
