🇺🇸 Union POW’s photographed by Andrew Jackso…

🇺🇸 Union POW’s photographed by Andrew Jackson Riddle on August 16, 1864 at the Confederate prison named ‘Camp Sumter’ near Andersonville, Georgia. More prisoners died during that terrible August of 1864 when the prisons ranks swelled to over 33,000 men. Very few rations and a low supply of fresh water combined with rampant disease led to that August being the deadliest month in the prisons history. In total over the camps life nearly 13,000 Union men would perish there. [Library of Congress] #history #usa #america #civilwar
